Every item for sale here is individually crafted by Averill Shepps, an accomplished and respected artist who has been producing work for sale and exhibition for over 40 years. She teaches workshops in enameling and is currently serving a second term as President of the Enamelist Society, the professional organization for enamelists.
Glassmakers in Murano, Italy have been producing millefiori for centuries. The technique results in decorative glass pieces that look like flowers. To make this jewelry, the pieces are fired with vitreous enamel onto a highly polished copper base. The high 1500 degree temperature of the firing causes the enamel melt and bond to the copper.
Since the copper is polished before the enamel is applied, light is reflected from the shiny metal back through the transparent enamel and millefiori which enhances the depth of color and transparency to give an unparalleled jewel like effect. The pieces have great appeal, especially when the colors are chosen, applied and fired by a skilled artist and enamelist.
This is the same jewelry that is so popular at the Enamelists Gallery in the Torpedo Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia. Individual pieces have been given awards by jurors who judge all the work in the Gallery.
Demonstrations of enameling techniques can be seen at Averill's website, enamelist.com.
